Facebook’s New AI Research Gives Hope For The Future Of Bots

While many expect chat bots to become a huge part of our AI-dominated future, they have been rather underwhelming so far. Behind almost any online bot are drop-down menus, slightly tweaked to appear as questions. This makes the whole experience way too robotic. In order to reach new heights, chatbots need new skills. They need to get cognitive abilities to reason with people. And these abilities might not be as far as you think. Facebook has been a major player in this field for a long time. They already launched their chatbot assistant, simply known as M. Yes, it’s true that it’s still humans who do all the difficult tasks, but it’s a step in the right direction. Facebook also created an open-source tool, designed to teach bots. Fighting Stress? Here’s a Little Help From Amazon

Modern living can be busy, demanding and always switched on. While we are not able to control the external stress-inducing factors from our surroundings, we can better manage how we react to them. Sometimes it is as simple as clearing your head and taking full, slow breaths while collecting yourself. Other times, you need to detach yourself from the issue by doing something easy, low-maintenance and repetitive like fidgeting or being creative. The fidget spinner has taken over the schoolyard but what about us adults who have more stress than homework to worry about. Here are some adult gadgets to help you get through to the office induced stress. The Fidget Cube has the same principle as the spinner but is more a more subtle version. The cube has six sides, allowing you to glide, flip, roll and click for when you need to sharpen your focus. No batteries are…

The $10 Million Melted Cheese Store Everyone’s Talking About (Nope! Not a Joke!)

Forget Mars colonies and AI. Kaplan declared he had “developed a set of technology that allows us to make the perfect grilled cheese.” The innovation was as meaningful as it was miraculous: the sandwich had “that nostalgic thing,” Kaplan explained. Grilled cheese sandwiches were the fast food equivalent of Proust’s madeleines, priming them for disruption. Swisher and Mossberg openly smirked. “I feel like this is post-traumatic stress from Cisco,” said Swisher. “I think he went home and looked at his money,” Mossberg deadpanned. Kaplan was unfazed. Armed with a tech founder’s unflappable confidence and ambitious growth targets, he announced plans to open 500 fast-casual outlets within five years — all of them company-owned, not franchised. Never mind that it had taken Chipotle three times as long to hit that milestone using the same model. Kaplan felt confident in his melted-cheese rocket ship. The Melt boasted an elite group of investors —…

Google To Clean Up The Web With Its Own Ad Blocker In 2018

Google plans to release its own ad blocker for Chrome in early 2018, referred to simply as ad filter. While it’s still not happening for many months, the company tells website owners to get ready. Google wants them to readjust their advertisement strategy and remove the most annoying ads from their pages. The new ad filter will not completely rid the Internet of advertisements. It will assess websites to find if they have too many intrusive ads, and eliminate them. Say goodbye to these disruptive banners and autoplay videos. Others, more subtle, will still be displayed. Google executives say that the new software will block even ads, owned or served by the company if pages do not follow ‘Chrome’s guidelines’. The tech giant offers a tool that publishers can use to see if their web pages will meet the requirements. A group, named the Coalition for Better Ads, is working on analyzing…

Amazon Patents a Parachute Shipping Label for Drone Deliveries

Amazon has received a patent for a shipping label that includes a built-in parachute, “to enable the delivery of packages by [unpiloted] aerial vehicles (UAVs) or other aerial vehicles.” The patent, as reported by GeekWire, was filed in August 2015 and granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Monday. This means it may be possible in the near future that your Amazon package could be dropped from the sky without any damage thanks to this special label. It is unclear whether the patent will ever be put to use, though the patent may provide new insight into Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery project. The system calls for a packaging label that would be integrated with a folded parachute and a network of cords. It could also incorporate a breakaway cover, shock absorbers, and a network of sensors built into a drone to track the package’s descent. The…

Bragi’s Dash Pro Earbuds Can Translate Languages in Real Time

Much of what’s in Douglas Adams’s Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy remains firmly in the world of science fiction: the ability to travel faster than the speed of light, teleportation, polite doors with personalities. But one advancement—the Babel fish that can translate different languages in real time—might be one step closer to becoming a reality, thanks to a collaboration between the app developers at iTranslate and the audiophiles at wireless earbud company Bragi. While it’s not an actual fish, nor does it allow you to talk to aliens (yet), the new technology could make it a lot easier to find, for example, that unmapped pho stall in Hanoi or ask for subway directions in Tokyo. Released today, Bragi’s Dash Pro fully wireless earbuds are what the company’s calling “the world’s first language translating ear computer”—essentially, earphones that can also translate nearly 40 different languages in real time when connected to…
