Asus C302 Review: a $500 MacBook for Everyone

What makes the perfect “everyday” computer? You probably have a different definition of the ideal day-to-day laptop than me, but I’m willing to be there’s some crossover: minimal weight, enough battery life to last most of the day away from the plug, a clear and crisp screen, good keyboard and mouse, and enough power that you’re not left waiting. If you take those as the important criteria and forget about Mac vs PC vs anything else, then a lot comes down to price. You shouldn’t overpay for a laptop you’re not going to use to the max, and that’s why I would argue that this $500 Chromebook is the laptop most people should buy right now. At the very least, it’s the most capable sub-$500 laptop you can buy right now. I’m not going to rehash the argument over whether Chromebooks are a viable main PC these days. Provided that…

Roomba vs. Eufy: The Robo-Battle Of Vacuum Cleaners

Do you want to save as much time as possible for something more meaningful and enjoyable than home cleaning routine? Use a machine, there’s a bunch out there. Automated cooking, automated cleaning – we have left our most basic tasks to the electrically-powered gizmos. They evolve too, taking away more and more of our responsibilities. When it comes to robot vacuum cleaners, the market has quite a few offers. Dyson 360 Eye, Neato Botvac, Hoover Robo – these are some of the best models out there. Roomba 650 by iRobot has been particularly great for years thanks to its navigational capabilities. Carpets, cables, thresholds – these obstacles could maybe stop some other machines but have never posed a threat to this little guy. It also has enough power to clean most of the trash on the floor. Of course, robot vacuums have never claimed to be as good as your…

The Ecobee Thermostat Has Amazon Alexa Built in So You Can Adjust the Temperature by Talking to It

This new smart thermostat now has an edge over its competition: a speaker, microphone, and Alexa built-in. The Ecobee 4, a Wi-Fi–enabled device with Amazon’s voice-enabled Alexa software integrated into it is similar to Google’s ‘Nest’. The Ecobee 4 has the full range of Alexa skills, you can also ask the thermostat things like the weather outside and football scores while also controlling your smart lights. The device takes advantage of the more than 12,000 voice commands supported by Alexa. The features that set The Ecobee apart are that it works with small, floss-sized individual room sensors (up to 32). The sensors, which can be affixed to a wall or stand on their own, detect each room’s occupancy and temperature so Ecobee can better manage a home’s hot and cold spots. The central thermostat and its sensors communicate with each other to determine whether you’re actually at home and where you…

The Real World Blend-off: Ninja Ultima vs. Vitamix 5200 (Video)

Want to be taken seriously as a chef when it comes to blenders? The answer until today was always Vitamix. Whenever we visited a professional kitchen – there it was, a Vitamix blender, ready for smoothing, sousing, chopping, juicing or turning into soup anything with vitamins, minerals or proteins in it. But that blending onslaught came at a price, which was always a factor: $450 to $800 price tag for a blender would scare off any amateur. The pros, however, have always been extremely appreciative of the unprecedented power of the Vitamix, which gives a run for its money to virtually any other blender in the marketplace. Watch out, Hamilton beach! Ninja, on the other hand, was presented in 2013 specifically to counter the steep price of the Vitamix with a more lenient ‘bang for the buck’ approach without sacrificing of what’s important: power, design and general appeal. The Ninja’s…

Amazon Just Gave You A Way To Monitor What Your Kids Are Doing Online

Amazon launched its Fire Kids Edition tablet with the intention of giving peace of mind to parents who give their kids access to the latest technology. To make sure content available on kids’ Kindles is appropriate, Amazon content editors whitelist sites and YouTube videos as safe for kids. The tablets are aimed at kids between the ages of three and 12 and have 10 million users worldwide, according to Amazon, though it won’t say how many users have bought a subscription for access to premium content. Kids also can’t make in-app purchases in FreeTime. (The FTC recently fined the company over unauthorized in-app game purchases made by users’ children as they played on Amazon devices.) The Amazon parent dashboard will have moderators approving everything kids can access on the device, including more than 8,000 books and 40,000 white-listed webpages. The dashboard lives at parents.amazon.com and can be accessed from any web…

Why Your Next Wi-Fi Setup Should Be a Mesh Network

The next time you upgrade your Wi-Fi equipment, take a bold step: Throw out your stand-alone router and instead consider investing in a so-called mesh system. A mesh network could solve most, if not all, of your Wi-Fi problems. It’s basically a system of multiple Wi-Fi stations that work together to blanket every corner of your home with a strong wireless data connection. Unlike stand-alone routers that lose signal the farther you move away from them, mesh stations piggyback on one another to create a continuous wireless link throughout your home, minimizing the possibility of dead zones. The network technology is quickly becoming popular: After the start-up Eero released a mesh system last year, bigger brands like Google and D-link followed with similar products. Obviously, large houses with many rooms would benefit from multiple Wi-Fi hubs. But based on my tests with several mesh systems over the last year, I…
